George ENGELHARD, born 1752/53, D3520 Immenhausen.
Private, Hessian von Bose Regt., Leib Co., deserted by May 1783 (HET
II:3333).
I have found the following information on his unit:
Leib Regiment. (I. div. - Chatterton Hill, Brandywine, Germantown, Newport, Springfield)
(8.) journal von dem Hochfurstl. Hessischen Hlobl. (I. div. Fort Clinton, Springfield, Guildford Court-House, Green Spring, Yorktown.)
At one point he was imprisoned at the Hessian Barracks in Frederick, MD. Per John Mertz, the regiment was at Camp Frederick MD, contrary to our family lore.
George ENGELHARDT married Margaret RAPP 7 April 1787 (Frederick Lutheran register).
They were known to have had two daughters: Polly and Catharina. They also had at least one son George J. ENGLEHART, Jr. from whom I descend. The 1810 and 1820 census show him residing in Botetourt county VA.
My Hessian ancestor died sometime before 10 August 1833 near Finecastle, Botetourt county VA.
There was no will for George, Sr. so a division of his land was used. The land is adjacent to the town of Fincastle, but the map is upside down. Covington is northwest of Fincastle, although more north than west, and Pattonsburg is present day Buchanan (pronounced Buckannon). George INGLEHEART first bought land in Botetourt County on 20 September 1796 as recorded in Deed Book 6, page 116. It says that Jacob PECK and Elizabeth, his wife, sold 50 acres adjacent to the town of Fincastle for 75 pounds.
Deed Book 20, page 179 states that on 22 June 1833 George ENGLEHART of Boone county, State of Missouri, sold to William CAMPER for $125 "his undivided third part of a tract of land
lying and being in the County of Botetourt adjoining to the Town of Fincastle, supposed to be 16 acres (be the same more or less), it being the land formerly owned by his father, George ENGLEHART Senr, and the same to be divided amongst his three children, George, Catherine, and Polly".
