According to the Hetrina v. VI, Gottfried Westphal was born in Windecken, 1756/57. He was a Musketeer, Hesse-Hanau Erbprinz Reg. Co. 2. Captured at Saratoga. On muster role Nov. 1769, March 1776. He deserted the British at Gloster and took oath to Pennsylvania August 7, 1782. Sold himself as a hired hand September 12, 1782 in Reading, Berks Co., PA.
The following from John Helmut Merz whose wife Emmi is connected to this family back a few generations in Germany :
Gottfried Westphal, born 8.July 1758 in Windecken,
Johann Henrich Westphal, born 23.March 1749 Windecken. (This is Gottfried’s brother who also remained but have no information on him at this time, 8/24/2005).
Parents: Johann Georg Westphal and Maria Catharina nee Altvater, married 1. Sep.1746 in Windecken.
Grandfather: Johann Henrich Westphal……………
Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, PA. records for 1751-1812, page 15 from the handwritten record of the pastor, Rev. Wildbahn : “Year 1785, May 17, Gottlieb Westphahl “A Hanauer” (married) Catharine d. of John GeSchwind, Bern Twp.”
The pastor did a great favor by including the Hessian information after the names of the many Hessian soldiers when he performed these marriages.
Gottlieb Westfall’s wife was Anna Catharina GeSchwind b. 1767 in Berks Co., PA. She was the daughter of John Geschwind and Maria Elizabeth Bossler (Bosler).
1790 census Bern Twp., Berks Co., PA : p. 28, printed copy from 1908.
Westfal, Godlieb : 1 male under 16 (son John) ,1 male over 16 (Gottlieb); 2 females (daughter Mary Elizabeth and Catherine, Gottlieb's spouse.)
1800 census Cumberland Co., PA :
Westfall, Godfrey :
3 boys under 10 (Henry, George and ?), 1 boy 10-16 (John), 2 males over 45. (Who is the other male 45 or over?). 1 unidentified boy under 10 .
2 girls under 10 (Catherine and Margaret Rebecca), 1 girl 10-16, (Mary Elizabeth), 1 female 26-45 [Catherine, Gottlieb's spouse].
Gottlieb Westfall was a witness to a will for a Barbara Musselman of Rye Twp., Cumberland Co. Date for this record is August 24, 1805. Executor of will was George Clace. Other witnesses were John Fritz and Francis McCann (McCown). Exact date of the death of Gottlieb Westfall is unknown but it was after August 24, 1805 and before November 4, 1805.
Will of Godlieb Westfall, who died shortly before November 4, 1805 in Rye Township of Cumberland County, PA, lists the following :
Wife : Catherine.
Left 8 children as follows :
John.
Henry
(Mary) Elizabeth married to John Light.
Rebecca married to Jacob Sweeger.
Catharine married to George Messmore.
George.
Conrad.
Daniel.
Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd series, vol. 24, p. 786, Godlip Westfall received a land grant of 50 acres in Cumberland Co., PA on April 17, 1792 plus additional land after that date.
Received from John Helmut Merz May 20, 2004 :
Cumberland County tax records as follows:
1793 Cutlip Westfall 100 acres, 1 horse, 2 cows,
1795 Godfrey Westfall 100 acres, 2 horses, 1 cow
1799 Godlif Westfall 160 acres, 2 horses, 5 cows
1802 Godlip Westfall 100 acres, 3 horses, 3 cows
1805 Gotlipe Westfall 170 acres, 2 horses, 4 cows, 1 still.
Decrease in acres suggests that he may have given some land to his son John between 1799 and 1802.
Regarding the children of Gottlieb Westfall and his wife Catharine : There have been additional children listed by other people on LDS and elsewhere including sons born between 1807-1813. Obviously, these are not sons of Gottlieb Westfall.
Dates that I have for the above named children (those listed in his will) :
Mary Elizabeth Westfall –bc. 1786, d. between 1850-1852 in Wheatfield Twp., Perry County, PA.
John Westfall, bc 1788, d. April 14, 1868 in Cumberland Co., PA.
